Machakos County governor's win nullified

Today 8th June the court of appeal of the republic of Kenya has nullified the election and declaration of the Machakos Governor, Dr Alfred Nganga Mutua. The Court of appeal has maintained that the Machakos county elections were not held according to the law and dictates of the 2010 constitution of the republic of Kenya and therefore Mutua was not validly elected as the governor of Machakos.

The case had been appealed by the Machakos Governors fiercest competitor and former Kathiani MP Honorable Wavinya Ndeti who went into the race using the wiper ticket to compete with the governor in the August 8th elections.

Dr. Mutua had won the gubernatorial race using the Maendeleo Chap Chap ticket after he fell out with Kalonzo Musyoka before abandoning the Wiper Party. The Machakos High Court had upheld Mutua’s win before Wavinya Ndeti went to appeal the case at the Court of Appeal.

However, the residents of Machakos have expressed different reactions after the ruling by the court of appeal. Mutua has appealed the case at the Supreme Court of Kenya. Mutua accuses the Court of appeal not considering some of the evidence tabled before the court and making a ruling basing arguments on accusations and not evidence provided to the court.

Mutua however blames his woes on his possible competitors in the 2022 presidential poll as he accuses some government officials wanting to terminate his ambition of becoming the president of the Republic of Kenya. This is after Mutua called on the lifestyle audit of all the civil servants and top government officials including the president and his deputy, William Samoei Arap Ruto.

The governor made the remarks following the ongoing crackdown of the corrupt government officials following the grand corruption scandals at the National Youth Service, the National Cereals Board and Kenya Pipeline Service.
